Emergency 911

Line of Duty

The Morristown Police Department joins the ranks of all those law enforcement agencies who have suffered the greatest of tragedies, the loss of one of their own during the performance of their sworn duties. We will never forget these brave Officers or the sacrifice that they made.

Officer Joseph F. Vorholz
On October 4th, 1929, shortly after 1pm, Officer Vorholz responded on his motorcycle to a call of a neighborhood dispute on Nicholas Avenue. When returning, while traveling down Speedwell Avenue near Clinton Street, the motorcycle skidded and fell, throwing Officer Vorholz to the ground. The motorcycle turned and slid across the street, pinning Officer Vorholz beneath it's weight. He was taken to Hospital in the back of a truck and was examined by Dr. Clifford Mills, former Town Mayor. Officer Vorholz died approximately 4 hours later from a blood clot in his skull. Officer Vorholz was 43 years old and a life long resident of Morristown.

Officer Carl Schlotz
On May 17, 1936, Officer Schlotz responded to Burnham Lake on a report of a dead body in the water. When Officer Scholtz waded into the water to retrieve the body, he slipped on a rock and fell ten feet over the pond slipway before striking his head on the concrete bottom. Officer Scholtz died days later from head injuries sustained during the fall. He was an 11 year veteran of the Morristown Police Department and had served as a New Jersey State Trooper for the first 4 years preceeding his appointment. Officer Scholtz was 35 years old at the time of his death.
