Communications

image dispatch

The Communications Unit of the Police Department is responsible for receiving all calls for service within the Town of Morristown and for dispatching all appropriate responses.  At this time, the Morristown Police Department employs 4 full time civilian Communications Officers who are assigned to a particular squad.

The Communications Officer serves as the focal point of the department as all calls for service come through this area.  Communications Officers are responsible for answering the Police Desk (non-emergency) phone as well as the 911 Emergency line and are responsible for dispatching all police, fire and emergency medical units.

Internal Affairs

The Internal Affairs Unit is supervised by Captain John Kruse and is responsible for the receipt, investigation and resolution of citizen complaints of police misconduct. All inquiries or questions should be directed to Captain Kruse at 973-292-6616.

School Resource / DARE

The Morristown Police Department recognizes the importance of education as a means to prevent children from taking the wrong path in life. To that end, MPD strives to maintain a good working relationship with all school officials to identify and prevent potential problems within the school population. Unfortunately, due to current staffing and budget constraints, the department no longer assigns a full time resource officer to the school system. We continue however, to maintain a strong, visible presence at openings, closings and throughout the school day.

Fleet Maintenance

The Police Department uses a variety of vehicles to complete the many tasks that must be fulfilled each day. The fleet maintenance officer must ensure that all vehicles are road ready and are outfitted with the necessary equipment at all times.

The primary vehicle used by the Morristown Police Department is the Ford Crown Victoria with a police interceptor package. The Department currently operates a fleet of 12 of these vehicles.

The police cars are easily recognized with their distinctive black and white color scheme and the MPD logo proudly displayed on the front doors.

This 1987 Ambulance was donated to the Morristown Police Department by the Morristown Ambulance Squad and is being fitted to become the new Mobile Command Post, replacing the old MCP, which was retired in 2003.

This vehicle, a 1985 Dodge Pickup, is used by the Services Division and serves by transporting materials to and from scenes as needed. It is frequently used by the Firearms Unit for transporting training materials to and from the firearms range.

Firearms Unit

The Morristown Police Department strives to ensure that all police officers maintain an extremely high level of proficiency with their firearms and has established a demanding training program, which all officers must complete. The department attempts to provide it's officers with real life training scenarios and uses a combination of target shooting and computer simulations to provide the most realistic training possible.

Officers are required to show proficiency with their firearms by qualifying twice annually as required by the NJ Attorney General Guidelines and may be required to shoot in all kinds of weather. The department has a small number of officers who have undergone extensive training to become instructors and who are responsible for running the MPD Firearms Training Unit. Members of this unit have attended specialized classes held throughout the country and many are graduates of the Smith & Wesson Training Academy.
