Records Bureau
The Records Bureau is responsible for maintaining, filing, sorting and storing all records created by the Morristown Police Department. This includes all Incident Reports, Accident Reports, Property and Inventory Reports and all other documentation that is required by the State and Federal Governments. In addition, this unit maintains a database of all persons arrested in Morristown that includes all pertinent information of the arrest as well as photographs and fingerprints when applicable. Property & Evidence
The Property Bureau is staffed by a full time Police Officer and is responsible for the storage and handling of all property obtained by the department. All property and evidence that is recovered is stored in a secure area and is catalogued for retrieval at a later time. The Property Officer is also responsible for submitting all evidence to the proper labs and maintaining the chain of custody.The Morristown Bureau of Police Property Officer is P.O. Communications
The Communications Unit of the Police Department is responsible for receiving all calls for service within the Town of Morristown and for dispatching all appropriate responses. At this time, the Morristown Police Department employs 3 full time civilian Communications Officers who are assigned to a particular squad.
The Communications Officer serves as the focal point of the department as all calls for service come through this area. Communications Officers are responsible for answering the Police Desk (non-emergency) phone as well as the 911 Emergency line and are responsible for dispatching all police, fire and emergency medical units.
 Each call for service must be logged into a computer aided dispatch center so that the assigned units may be tracked and monitored and vital information may be easily retrieved at a later time. This Communications Officer is also responsible for providing NCIC/SCIC lookups, warrant checks and motor vehicle lookups as requested by the patrol officers.
Internal Affairs
The Internal Affairs Unit is supervised by Captain John F.Kruse and is responsible for the receipt, investigation and resolution of citizen complaints of police misconduct. School Resource / DARE
The Morristown Police Department recognizes the importance of education as a means to prevent children from taking the wrong path in life. To that end, MPD strives to maintain a good working relationship with all school officials to identify and prevent potential problems within the school population. Unfortunately, due to current staffing and budget constraints, the department no longer assigns a full time resource officer to the school system. We continue however, to maintain a strong, visible presence at openings, closings and throughout the school day.
Firearms Training Unit
The Morristown Police Department strives to ensure that all police officers maintain an extremely high level of proficiency with their firearms and has established a demanding training program, which all officers must complete. The department attempts to provide it's officers with real life training scenarios and uses a combination of target shooting and computer simulations to provide the most realistic training possible.
Officers are required to show proficiency with their firearms by qualifying twice annually as required by the NJ Attorney General Guidelines and may be required to shoot in all kinds of weather. The department has a small number of officers who have undergone extensive training to become instructors and who are responsible for running the MPD Firearms Training Unit. Members of this unit have attended specialized classes held throughout the country and many are graduates of the Smith & Wesson Training Academy. |
