Firearms Training Unit

The Morristown Police Department strives to ensure that all police officers maintain an extremely high level of proficiency with their firearms and has established a demanding training program which all officers must complete. The department attempts to provide its officers with real life training scenarios and uses a combination of target shooting and computer simulations to provide the most realistic training possible.

Officers are required to show proficiency with their firearms by qualifying twice annually as required by the NJ Attorney General Guidelines and may be required to shoot in all kinds of weather.

The department has a small number of officers who have undergone extensive training to become instructors and who are responsible for running the MPD Firearms Training Unit. Members of this unit have attended specialized classes held throughout the country and many are graduates of advanced training and armorer schools.
