Kleitman Woods at Hillcrest Avenue
Property History:
Milton & Bertha Kleitman purchased their home at 20 Hillcrest Avenue in the 1940’s. Over the years, they gradually purchased the surrounding lots of land, which amassed to 2 acres of land. Today, we recognize this property as Kleitman Woods and dedicate the park in their honor. Their vision is a model of what the Town is currently seeking to accomplish as a Sustainable Community.
In 2012, the Morristown Environmental Commission (MEC) was approached by neighbors of an abandoned house located at 20 Hillcrest Avenue, recommending the Town purchase the 2-acre property and consider turning it into a park. The MEC agreed and made the recommendation of preservation to Mayor Timothy Dougherty & the Town Council.
Morristown is one of the most densely populated municipalities in Morris County. This property contributes to the protection of water sources in the Highlands Planning Area as it sits on top of a critical groundwater recharge area for the town. The park is easily accessible to many neighborhood children and families.
The Town of Morristown acquired 20 Hillcrest Ave. with funds from a $100,000 grant from New Jersey’s Green Acres program and a $254,000 grant from Morris County’s Open Space program. Following the demolition of the house, the Town’s “official” groundbreaking took place on June 5th, 2017.
Being that this is the first NEW park added to the Town’s recreational open spaces in 50 years, the Town of Morristown and the Morristown Environmental Commission are confident that the park at Kleitman Woods at Hillcrest Avenue, will serve as a gathering spot for generations to come.
